Guardian Angel Cathedral is the Catholic church closest to the Las Vegas Strip. It sits a block east of Las Vegas Boulevard on Desert Inn Road, next to the Encore, and it is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Las Vegas. It's also the closest Catholic church to the Las Vegas Convention Center. Anyone can walk in. I live in Las Vegas, I photographed it for the first Letters From Joseph letter, and this is the guide I'd hand a friend staying on the Strip or in town for a convention.

Before you go

The cathedral has Saturday vigil Masses, several Sunday Masses and weekday Masses, with confession on weekday mornings and Saturday afternoon. Times change with holy days and seasons, so check the cathedral's own site on the day you go. The parish office is open weekdays and sits inside the Archdiocesan Catholic Center.

On Saturdays, confession ends early so the priest can prepare for the vigil Mass. If you're counting on it, get there at the start.

Is there a Catholic church on the Las Vegas Strip?

Not on the Boulevard itself, but this is as close as it gets. From the north end of the Strip (Wynn, Encore, Resorts World, Fontainebleau) it's a short walk. From the middle of the Strip it's a quick ride. The address is 302 Cathedral Way, Las Vegas, NV 89109.

Mass near the Las Vegas Convention Center

If you're in town for a show at the Convention Center, this is your church. From the West Hall it's about half a mile on foot, roughly a 10-minute walk. From the Central, North and South Halls it's closer to a mile and a quarter, about 25 minutes walking, or a short ride. The weekday Masses at 9 in the morning and around noon fit between sessions; check gaclv.org for the day's times before you head over.

How a church ended up next to the casinos

It started in 1958 with a 4:30 in the morning Mass. Joe Bock, food and beverage manager at the Stardust and the Desert Inn, asked Fr. Richard Crowley, a Viatorian priest, to say Mass for the cooks, bartenders, waiters and musicians coming off the last shift, so they could keep their Sunday obligation before going home. The first one was held in a Strip hotel showroom.

Fr. Crowley's own parish had a rough start. St. Viator Church, built in 1955 on a former city dump, was condemned and torn down within months. So he asked casino owner Moe Dalitz for land near the Desert Inn, and in 1961 Dalitz gave it. Dalitz was Jewish, a former bootlegger and one of the early money men of the Strip. He wanted a church close to the people who worked the casinos.

The church opened on October 2, 1963, the feast of the Guardian Angels, as Guardian Angel Shrine. It became a co-cathedral in 1977, the cathedral of the new Diocese of Las Vegas in 1995, and on May 30, 2023, when Pope Francis made Las Vegas an archdiocese, its metropolitan cathedral.

The building: Paul R. Williams's A-frame

Dalitz brought in Paul R. Williams, the Los Angeles architect he had worked with on the Royal Nevada hotel. Williams was one of the best-known Black architects in America, and he designed the shrine as a great A-frame crossed by twelve smaller ones. Inside, the aisle runs straight to the altar and the roof ribs meet overhead. It seats about 1,100.

The art: the Piczek sisters

Almost all the art is the work of two sisters, Edith and Isabel Piczek. Edith made the mosaic over the main doors: the Guardian Angel with three figures, Prayer, Penance and Peace. She also painted the mural behind the altar.

Isabel designed the stained glass. The Stations of the Cross are set into the twelve triangular windows along the sides, and in one of them you can find Las Vegas itself: the hotels and casinos, theater masks and all. The sisters called their style Mystic Realism. Up close, every figure breaks into shards of color.

Homeless Jesus on the plaza

Out front, on a bench facing the Strip, is a bronze figure wrapped in a blanket. Only the feet show, and they carry the nail wounds. It is Timothy Schmalz's Homeless Jesus, blessed by Archbishop George Leo Thomas in 2026. The bench is long enough to sit on, and people do.

What to look for inside

  • The mosaic over the doors before you go in.
  • The Holy Family at the base of the tower. They are the patrons of the Church in Las Vegas.
  • The window with the casinos in it, along the side walls.
  • The crucifix hanging in front of the mural behind the altar.
  • The archdiocese's coat of arms on the pew ends and set in the floor, with a Joshua tree at the center.
  • The small side chapel with candles and the Sacred Heart.

These are six of the nineteen photographs I took at Guardian Angel. The full set, with a note on each one, is in the Guardian Angel gallery. Members log in with the email they joined with. Guardian Angel was the first letter I ever mailed, and it is still available as a past edition if you'd like it in your own hands.

Two other Catholic churches sit close to the tourist areas. The Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer is near the south end of the Strip, and St. Joan of Arc is downtown, a short walk from Fremont Street. Guides to both are coming. For more places like this one, browse churches and shrines in The Catholic Pilgrim's Guide.
